Mother of two shares her story after losing hundreds of dollars in social media scam
Stuff.co.nz shares this story from a mother of two about how she was scammed through social media. Sam Leggett the senior Analyst at CERT Nz shares some tips on how to keep yourself safe.
“Tiana King never thought that she would end up as the victim of a cyber scam.
The 27-year-old shared a post on Facebook in April 2022 for what she thought was an online competition.
A comment on the post told her she had won $1000 and just needed to provide her bank details, but after following through with this, King had $340 stolen from her account.”
Scammers will find any narrative possible to be able to scam people out of their money. They get more creative with it all the time. Sam shared some examples on the breakfast show this morning, which included stories about people who were given their 90 days notice in their rental property and scammers took that opportunity while the people were vulnerable by pretending to have rentals available. So be vigilant and google search to check that these places are legitimate before going any further.
